El Monje, de Matthew G. Lewis, libro terrible y una de las cimas de la novela gótica, vio la luz en marzo de 1796, despertando inmediatamente el interés y el asombro del público y la crítica. No obstante, ya desde su aparición la obra fue tachada de corrompida y blasfema por los sectores más apegados a los sacrosantos valores morales y religiosos, sin escatimar airados epítetos que la condenaban por libertina, impía y atea.
